Spider Princess is a fanciful piece which began as a collage—a medium I enjoy working in because it lends itself easily to the “fantastical”. By allowing my imagination to run freely, I put unlikely images together – a photograph of myself holding a balloon and images from old history and biology textbooks. Thus, I created the Spider Princess and her story.
As a result of a magic spell cast by the Grey Witch, the Spider Princess sprouted from a flower—part spider and part human. The king, her father, declared her the “Spider Princess” and gave her dominion over the grey people. Sadly, she did not understand nor love them because they were a heartless people—colorless and empty. So, one by one, she punished them for their acts of cruelty, hoping that they would change their ways, yet they did not. In fact, their hardheartedness worsened, and as time went on, she began to change little by little until finally one day, she became like them.
"El universo onírico en Fragmentos: Pilar Acevedo" is an article written by the marvelous storyteller, Rocio Santos. Ms. Santos writes for El Beisman and also hosts expanded Spanish-language music and talk blocks on Vocalo 89.5 FM & 90.7 FM on Sundays. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did.
The first article is Ms. Santos's article in its entirety from El Beisman's site and it is in Spanish; however, an English translation is available below as well.
