Art inspires more art and such was the case with Heaven Bound. After recently re-reading Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem, Sympathy, I was moved to create this piece using a small vintage cage that I had always seen in my mind’s eye as a female form. As often happens when I work, a narrative unfolded and I wrote the following poem around its circumference:
Bound within flesh, metal, wood, and blood,
my heart beats to give me existence.
Oppressed by the stain of this thing called life,
my spirit reaches heaven, bound in song.
